How a Passion for Golf Turned into a Dream Career in Course Architecture

Imagine traveling the world, playing on incredible golf courses, and then one day deciding, “Hey, I want to design my own courses!” That’s exactly what happened for one golf course architect, whose love for the game and unique designs turned into a full-blown career. From a young age, golf course architect Tyler Rae was always captivated by the creative designs and quirks of golf courses. Whether it was the undulating greens or the tricky bunkers, he was hooked.

At 18, Tyler Rae packed his bags and headed to the University of Kentucky to study Landscape Architecture, and that was just the beginning. He went on to work with some of the biggest names in the business, including Keith Foster, Coore & Crenshaw, and the Doak/Renaissance Golf Design team. By 25, he was already deep in the game, working on legendary courses and soaking up knowledge from the best in the biz. “It was a passion from an early age and working under those architects solidified the passion into a career,” Rae tells Donald Ross Sportswear.

For him, golf course design wasn’t just about creating stunning landscapes—it was about merging his love of golf with his creative vision to build courses that golfers would remember for years. Today, Tyler Rae is living his dream, creating courses that challenge players and stand the test of time. It’s clear that for this architect, golf course design isn’t just a career; it’s his passion, come to life.
