Designing Golf Holes that Stand the Test of Time (and Fun!)

Ever wondered what makes a golf course unforgettable? Well look no further, as we have an insider scoop with golf course architect, Tyler Rae!  His secret to golf course design is creating holes that are as imaginative as they are challenging. Forget about cookie-cutter designs—Rae is all about crafting holes that offer a unique experience every time you step up to the tee. The goal? To design courses that are not only fun but will keep golfers coming back for decades.

When asked what makes a perfect course design, Tyler Rae replied, “A couple fun and wild greens, some quirkiness, a few hard/long holes, some fun short holes and an interesting routing maximizing the terrain with many climaxes and highs spread out during the round.”

One of Tyler Rae’s proudest projects is the work he did at Beverly Country Club in Chicago, a course originally designed by the legendary Donald Ross in 1919. When it came time to renovate, he dove into the project headfirst, spending weeks shaping every tee, bunker, and green. A historical course such as the Beverly Country Club is a perfect example of how a thoughtfully designed course can remain relevant and challenging, no matter how many years go by.

For this architect, creating a course isn’t just about building something beautiful—it’s about creating a legacy. Golfers should be able to come back and feel the excitement of the course, just like the first time they played it. In his eyes, a great golf course doesn’t just withstand the test of time—it thrives through it.
